Music Director’s Notes

February 1, 2026

While reflecting on the beatitudes today, I envisioned a master carpenter whose craftsmanship was so refined that he constructed chairs without glue, screws, or nails. As he carefully finished one of his sturdy, beautifully built chairs, he paused to offer a quiet prayer. He thanked God for the intellect and understanding required to master the intricacies of his work. He then asked that his chair find its way to someone in need—perhaps a person who is ill, or someone who, through no fault of their own, has fallen on hard times and cannot afford such a chair. Recognizing the blessings he’d received through his craft, he hoped to share his good fortune with others. Finally, his prayer was marked by humility, almost bordering on self-effacement, as he simply wished for the strength to continue pursuing excellence. This was the scene that came to mind as I read Matthew 5:1-12. No matter our field—be it music, art, medicine, law, or another—imagine how transformative it would be if we all approached our work with the same humble, generous spirit as this master carpenter.

First, I’d like to share a recap of the Christmas Concert. I want to thank the Bach Project Choir, readers – Deacon Nicholas Iarocci and Cheryl Charlillo, staff of dedicated producers and techs, and everyone who came to take part in our celebration of the Christ Child’s birth. Given the cold, windy night, I believe it was a success. If you were there, I hope you enjoyed yourself as much as we did.

It’s the time for New Year’s resolutions, and I have a few to share. I’ve created this new page on the website to better communicate with you on the progress of the Bach Project.

No. 1: I’m admittedly not so good at using social media. We have an X account that's barely used. I hope to remedy that by posting more and better content on X this coming year. I also want to keep everyone engaged and updated via the Bach Project website. Therefore, I’ll post updates on this page as much as possible.

No 2: There are several exciting projects underway for 2026 that you should be informed about. The Bach Project Choir and VBP Orchestra are embarking on a recording of Bach’s Magnificat, BWV 243. We plan to release the recording via several aggregators, including Apple Music and IDAGIO. As we approach the release date, I will announce where Bach Project’s Magnificat can be purchased online. For all of us “old school” folks, a limited run of CDs will also be available. All proceeds will go toward the Bach Project.

No. 3: We are still working toward our goal of bringing you Bach’s Mass in g-Minor, live and in concert, and the subsequent documentary entitled The Mystery of the Mass: Heart of Catholic Worship. We are thrilled to announce that we have won a grant, contingent on raising the remaining funds required to produce this ambitious project. Please consider supporting our funding goals to bring this great music and documentary to you. Donations can be made easily using the links on the website. All donations are tax-deductible.

I want to wish everyone a very healthy and happy New Year!

Soli Deo gloria!
